Kind of a continuation of the conversation a few days ago…potentially shooting myself in the foot with my personal definition of what a sneaker designer actually is…
How different are amateur Nike ID designers than colorway designers AT Nike?
The only thing I can really think of here, being that Nike ID designers are literally just individual people who are presented with a pallet of options and then get to mix and match however they see fit. Then they click ‘buy’ and someone else’s does the rest. Some designs come out great, others come out…not so great. Someone tryna charge $1k plus for their design is kinda crazy tho…
From the way that I understand it…Nike colorway designers work on teams that have to go through multiple levels of approval before anything gets produced and (hopefully) ultimately sold.
The funny part is - both individuals and teams can produce and create hits and/or absolute duds…
I guess the question then becomes entirely subjective: if someone, ANYONE, creates something I deem to be ‘dope’, do I think consider them an actual designer? What about the flip side - if they produce nothing but duds, would I still refer to them as a designer? Hmmmm
