(My second time using this audio in the past couple of days. And I love it when y’all hit me and ask me to comment on sneaker stuff…!)
A few things:
1. The first ‘leaked’ zoom call looked real. I’ve been sent a few *real* leaked calls from Nike employees and they looked exactly like that. And I know McEnroe has a history of being a reactionary ass, and I know Travis is likely entirely full of himself, and I didn’t know that they already decided on the name ‘Cactus Mac’ like months ago, so I definitely thought it could be real. I got got.
2. The second I saw that video of McEnroe in his trench coat I knew it was fake.
3. And then the spray paint thing was just dumb.
4. And the car thing with that Cactus Plant Flea looking swoosh was even dumber.
All that being said…
5. It’s fun, I suppose. In the famous words of Will Ferrell : ‘IT GETS THE PEOPLE GOING”
6. I kinda hate that they think they had to do it, though, which, brings me to point 7:
7. I think Nike is worried about losing their chokehold on the culture. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still #1 by far, but the resale world created during the pandemic is dwindling down. They obviously need to keep engagement high for people to care, right? RIGHT? I think this is totally unnecessary. Even though it is JUST a Mac Attack with a backwards swoosh, there was no danger of this shoe sitting, was there? I said it about the Original Mac Attack that dropped and a lot of (smart) people disagreed with me but those ALSO sold out in minutes.
8. It made me think of all of the amazing TV ads that Nike used to do - I haven’t seen anything new in YEARS so to me it makes me think about how they’re adapting to the culture of social media as best they can. And…IMO…in a few years, people will look back on this and think ‘man, that was dope’.
9. For me, tho, this still looks like a circus and these dudes look like clowns.
