Feels like it’s been weeks (or months) since we heard about these Nike layoffs and even though I don’t think it’s going to affect me much, I have to wonder about all of those people that will be impacted.
I dunno. Plenty of missteps for Nike and John Donahue over the last couple of years…sometimes it’s natural to see a pullback. Plenty of regular families and people with talent having to bite the bullet through no fault of their own always sucks.
When I was younger, I gave my heart and soul to a corporate job that obviously didn’t give a damn about me. I remember I worked on a project for a year and when I was ready to show it to upper management, my boss pulled me aside and said ‘they’re not gonna even look at it’ and I couldn't understand it. Why would anyone pay you to work on something they knew was useless? Why wouldn't they just let me add value? That killed me. When I left that corporation I vowed to never make myself that vulnerable with a corporation again.
Even though it may seem like I don’t get the whole Nike thing; I get it. I fully get it. I get that ‘corporations exist to make money’ and ‘they need to keep shareholders happy’ and ‘blah blah blah’. But those facts don’t make it any less crappy for those going through it.
Yeah, I know, bazillion dollar company. Boo frickin' hoo. First world problems. But could you imagine if all you ever wanted was to work for the swoosh and you worked your whole life to get there and then you moved your family there and then…for like several weeks…all you heard about in the news was that ‘layoffs are coming’…and…for those several weeks…you just been on pins and needles anxiously hoping that (a) you don’t get laid off or (b) you didn’t dedicate your life and your passion to another entity that just ‘exists [solely] to make money’?
To me just seems like just another corporation being driven by irresponsible decisions…I hope anyone impacted uses it as motivation to make it on their own. As lame as it sounds if y'all need anyone to talk to my DMs are always open...good luck y'all.
