Probably like once every couple of weeks now, I’ll totally find myself falling down the GOAT rabbit hole of looking for steals of shoes that I’ve never had the heart to pay even close to retail for…last night searches included ‘Adidas song for the mute’, ‘Stussy Air Max 2013’ and then these ‘Stussy Air Max Penny 2’s’
I’m only half on the fence with these Penny 2’s…meaning…I might pay around half retail for any one of these pairs…but it made me wonder why…considering my allegiance to Nike, the Penny 2 and Stussy..
Because…for probably a quarter of my life…Penny 2’s were a grail to me. Not a grail insomuch as like an impossible to find, prohibitively expensive shoe…but more like ‘I had those as a kid and their first retro didn’t drop til 10 years later’ kind of thing…they were always one of my favorite designs from the 90’s and I was never far from a pair up until maybe 2015 when I decided I didn’t need them any more.
And Stussy…well…Stussy was all over my clothing around the same time. I used to have this teal colored Stussy hoodie that I’d wear WITH my black Penny 2’s my senior year of high school up through that first year of college..both were poppin at the time.
Made me wonder if the marriage just took too long to transpire. If you TOLD me Stussy was going to design a Penny 2 I wouldn’t have believed you…and even if I did, these are not the colors or materials I would have predicted…but it begs the question…did this collaboration actually fall flat or was it just too late for folks to care?
