I haven’t watched a baseball game in roughly 10 years (last one I remember actually watching was the first year the Giants won the world series in like 2010 or 2011 with that lanky ass Tim Lyncecum dude pitching) and probably had t watched a game sincerely since like 1993. I really don’t care about baseball like that.
Someone asked me the other day - if I were to collect just one player from this set, who would it be? I first thought Griffey, because that was the dude we all went for in like 1989-1991 and the one closest to my mind.
And then I thought of Mike Trout. Not for any reason other than he’s apparently the best baseball player of all time (?) and I can probably make a bit of money off of his set.
And then I thought of Jackie Robinson, because I’m all about breaking the color barriers in my regular life.
And then I thought of Derek Jeter, cuz I feel some sort of kinship with him being that I spent a great deal of time in New York while he was reigning over the Yankees.
And then I remembered...for f*cks sake...I LIVE on Rickey Henderson’s block in Oakland. I’ve lived here with my wife and kids for the last 7 years. And although we live in a pretty paltry apartment, his old home is less than a block away. Oakland natives have referred to where I live (on more than one occasion) as ‘Rickey Hendersons block’. A dubious distinction, sure, but what better player to collect than the player who owns a home a half a block away? That’s my player set. Rickey Henderson.
