If you recall...I was sitting in the Dollar Tree parking lot (waiting for my wife to bring back some Jamaican food - FYI Dollar Tree is the only place on the West Coast that sells Golden Crust Patties lol)...I was searching ebay for these completely-new-to-me Topps Project 2020 cards when it all hit me like a ton of bricks: ‘man, why hasn’t anyone made sneaker trading cards?’
So I started doing some research. I found a couple of companies doing it... one company in Germany looks to be doing sneaker cards based around Magic the Gathering style cards, with different ‘values’ for each aspect of a shoe...I tried to get a few in hand, but my order was cancelled due to COVID shipping restrictions. And I found another guy doing custom sneaker cards called in LA...which looked incredible...but...I didn’t see the structure I was looking for.
So I started looking at the traditional card companies and found a few - @panini does these ‘sneaker spotlight’ cards that are definitely a step in the right direction, and some with swatches from actual sneakers are dope, too. Seriously, all of these cards looked really cool - for a sneakerhead - but I felt like the storylines these existing cards were limited to whoever happened to be wearing them at the time.
Why wasn’t someone doing this from more of a…’sneaker love’...perspective? I ran the idea through a trusted colleague and he was like ‘let’s see what you can come up with.’
So I sat down with a pencil and paper and just started sketching some ideas out. Sh*tty ideas. Good ideas. Interesting ideas. Terrible ideas. I tried to focus on things I liked, and tried to ignore the things I didn’t...And then I thought about the economics of it all…maybe this would be possible...
