I posted it in my story a few weeks ago, but in case you’ve been living under a rock, a BGC graded 9/10 Mike Trout rookie card recently sold for $3,930,000.

The first thing that popped in my mind when I heard about that Mike Trout sale was the Honus Wagner. When I was a kid the grail of all grails (for baseball cards) was the infamous Honus Wagner T206 card. I don’t know if it STILL is the grail of all grails (I’m sure it is), but haven’t heard anyone mention it in a few years. I don’t totally remember the story - but I think it was a card that they only included in cigarette packets and for whatever reason Honus Wagner didn’t want his name associated with the company so they pulled it. But not before a few had already been sent out.

About 30 years ago, Wayne Gretzky (yeah, the dad of @paulinagretzky ) purchased a copy of the card for some crazy amount (at the time). It was estimated to sell at $150k, but ended up selling for $450k. Once word got around and people started putting some pieces together - I think the general consensus was that the card had its edges trimmed and came out through PSA as an 8/10...altering cards is a HUGE deal, so I think the FBI got involved and the dude who sold the card to Gretzky even ended up serving some time in jail. There was a great mini-documentary on it called ‘Holy Grail: The T206 Honus Wagner’ that you can find all over the internet (for free) that explains the whole situation in great detail...it said that the last known sale of the Wagner was around $3m 12 years ago.

I don’t want to get too deep into the details here about the grading or whatever...but...I find it fascinating that a 10 year old card graded a 9/10 (NOT EVEN A 10/10!) sold for $3.93m and that 100+ year old Honus Wagner last sold for $2.8m. Wild.

I'd rather have the Wagner!
