If you follow @archive.dna account (I believe to be run by someone at Nike) you might have seen this pair of these Air Max 90’s…
I didn’t bother reading the caption when they came across my feed - I was busy drooling over them. For me, they brought across a ton of memories from the ‘laser’ era (roughly 2002-2005 when Nike slapped some kind of laser design on damn near EVERYTHING and called it ‘limited’ and we all went apeshit over it). Digging into the caption on the original post, apparently this pair was commissioned by the late @alexandermcqueen himself (along with the backpack and the jacket shown above) and came in a custom suede box. The whole collection was auctioned off at a black card Amex event in 2004…supposedly a true ‘1 of 1’.
Well, a few days after the layoffs at Nike went down - amongst a shit ton of random samples and PEs - a single pair of these ‘1 of 1’ AM 90’s ended up at @indexportland and are currently on sale (on their website) for $25,000. Not all that crazy of an occurrence, but definitely timely. I’m not sure if it’s THE 1-of-1 pair (no mention of a box, backpack, nor the jacket), but it definitely throws a wrench in the original story.
What am I implying? I’m guessing there’s more than one pair in existence. The auction winner still has his pair in the collection, but this pair is likely a sample that was carelessly kickin around the office. This is definitely not confirmed, but is it a stretch to imagine that a few people thought they were gonna get sacked and grabbed whatever they could on their way out the door? Shit, I know I would...
I think we’d all like to believe in this whole ‘1 of 1’ business, but I just don’t think it’s the reality…
