About a month later, I found some dude named IvanRussia selling Bitcoin on localbitcoins.com. We agreed to do the deal on eBay. I messaged him back and forth and...through broken English...he told me how it would work...I’d pay him any amount, he’d send me a random Hot Wheels car (to validate the eBay sale as eBay doesn’t protect the sale of digital goods), and when I received it I would have to give him positive feedback and then he’s shoot the bitcoin to my wallet address.
At the time, I was desperate. I needed to get my hands on some Bitcoin. Risky? Yea. But the FOMO of missing another bull run scared the hell out of me.
I trusted his process even though it sounded ludicrous. I hit that ‘Buy It Now’ for $100 and received a Hot Wheels car about a week later. I left that positive feedback, sent dude my wallet address and he hit me with my first portion of bitcoin.
So. Done.Seriously. This is how it worked back then. You had to just *trust* some random dude named IvanRussia to send you something a week after you sent him some money. People like to say ‘oh I shoulda got into Bitcoin back when I first heard about it’ and the fact is...that shit was hard. And it was risky. And it was exciting. But the idea was so fascinating to me. And the process of getting in and out and trying this new thing was riveting.
Truth be told I have no idea where I kept that BTC nor what I did with it. Even if I did I’m sure someone pilfered whatever wallet I had it sitting on. It’s GONE as far as I can tell.
