So yesterday I posted a video about one of the differences between trading cards and sneakers…and I don’t think I really explained it well enough for anyone to really make sense of what I was trying to say…funny that this morning I see there’s a release from Nike called ‘Air More Uptempo ‘Trading Cards’’…
Clearly, there are a LOT of differences between sneakers and trading cards…it’s like comparing apples to jalapeños. One is meant for wearing, one is meant for…trading?
What I was really trying to get at was there seems to be a point (with almost anything that people cherish) where its owner looks at as more (or less) than it’s inherant utility…at that point it either becomes ‘trash’ or it becomes a ‘collectible’. In 50 years - will a pair of whateverthefucks that came out last week be ‘wearable’ or will they be looked at more as ‘collectibles’?
IMO, there is a thin line between ‘wearable’ and ‘collectible’, and one of my goals in creating the grading system was to better help folks contextualize the differences. Admittedly, I sometimes have trouble recognizing the differences, too.
IMO, player exclusives, samples, one of ones, shoes over 20 years old, etc. These are probably better served as collectibles than wearables. Now, the question is, how do we keep them as collectibles (as opposed to just watching them crumble into dust)?
