I know this is like the dumbest thing in the world, but I am an absolute SUCKER for some jewel swooshes. I can’t explain why, but for real, I just really like them. AF1’s, AM1’s, AM90’s, Cortez’…I even considered a pair of Jewel Blazers for a time. Even that jewel swoosh on the heel of the Air More Uptempo is magnifique. I want to say most of it comes from the nostalgic feel they give me (I first noticed them around 1998 when I discovered the internet and saw them on AF1 mids, and I definitely copped a few pairs when they re-surfaced on AM1’s a couple of years back…It’s such a silly detail…why am I such a sucker for jewel swooshes? Is it my reptilian brain saying ‘oooh shiny! Me want!’ Or…Why?
Yesterday I saw this headline for a pair of 95’s with a ‘Jewel swoosh’ (swipe) and it got me thinking…is there any pair of Nikes that I *wouldn’t* want to see a jewel swoosh on?
Obviously, the jewel doesn’t work on all materials…it really couldn’t work on single layer materials (ie: footscapes, wovens, huaraches, etc.). I also think it wouldn’t work that well on many current athletic shoes (before they end up turning into lifestyle retros). But I think they’d definitely work on almost all runners. All Air Maxes from 87-03 are an easy sell for me. Waffle racers! Imagine Jewel Waffle racers! I’d be all over that!
Anyway, what am I forgetting? Where else would a jewel swoosh work? Where would it be a travesty?
