So…this Nike x StockX thing…Pretty wild, huh?
Whenever we think Nike isn’t doing anything, it’s always kind of comforting to know - even though they tend to move slow, they still make moves. I’ve pointed this out a hundred times (so many times, in fact, that an employee at Meta suggested I stop posting about it as they thought it could have been the reason my account got taken down so many times)…maybe they saw that video put out by @ebaysneakers
A couple of things I’m super curious about:
- I’d guess that more than 90% of Nike employees are not able to tell a real from a fake. And that’s not me trying to be rude, that’s me just saying that it takes a very pedantic person to focus on this stuff…so…
- That leads me to believe that Nike must have put either some *trackers* or some *very specific tells* on these pairs that they purchased from StockX (and deemed fake) so that they can easily tell. Could it possibly be RFIDs? Black light markers? What could these *tells* be?
- And that leads me to think…this must have been in the works for a long time…there’s approximately an 18-month turnaround on sneaker production and manufacturing…if that’s the case…they must have kept this really close to the chest - how were they able to prevent these tells from being leaked (by the factories)?
So what happens from here? I have no idea. Your guess is as good as mine. I’m very pessimistic when it comes to the never-ending bankroll of corporations (like StockX) and their ability to skirt legalities. So my initial thought is that nothing is going to change…at least for a while. IMO Nike is going to keep messing with people’s emotions with these ‘limited drops’, and those same people emotionally affected are still going to use StockX to pacify themselves.
