So awhile ago I came across this story on #blowoutcardforum about this Steph Curry Rookie Card Patch that has gone through all kinds of f*ckery. I don’t know if anyone has actually figured out what happened...but I think somewhere along the line the card was initially broke and sold around $2k back when it was first pulled.
A couple of years later, when steph became ‘Steph’, the card was graded a BGS 8.5 and sold for $215k on ebay to a buyer with an address in America but who is actually a collector in China...shortly after, THE SAME CARD (people think it’s the same card because it appears to be the exact same patch) was re-graded a BGS 9.5 and sold for a whopping $400k.
There’s all kinds of confusion around the card itself - some people think the patch on the card was swapped with a card in better condition but with a crappier patch. Some people think the original card was trimmed because the edges on this card got a higher grade than on the earlier card.
One guy on the forum who happens to be really good at picking up the small details layered images of the two cards over each other and posted a GIF of it on Youtube so we could see that the card was likely TRIMMED to get it a higher grade and thus a significantly higher price…that’s what the video you see above is showing. Look along the top right corner of the card as the video plays.
I read through the thread once and it was super confusing but also super interesting and I’ve been sitting on the video for damn near a year so I could have mistaken some info. If you want a link to the thread hit me up and I’ll provide it. Maybe you could summarize it better than I can.
In any case - grading cards is big business - when is grading shoes going to be big business?
