A great question popped up in my comments yesterday and I just had to address it...I’ve heard similar questions but thought now would be a good time to go for it…from @shreddsledd was:
“Could you comment you[r] thoughts on StockX vs. GOAT for authenticity reliability?”
This is a great question because, in my mind, it’s a simple answer. However, my buying habits are probably not very common.
I remember when @joshluber told me that he was building out this marketplace (we worked together briefly on the venture that led to @stockx), he told me that he was going to guarantee ‘authenticity’. And in my mind, I was thinking…’you’re opening up a can of worms. Once you pass that first fake - and you will - you’re gonna be in some sh*t.’ I want to say it was a few months after @stockx opened for business that I saw my first twitter thread going into a pair of fakes. It was all damage control in the comments. I think the branding that has made @stockx as popular as it has (ie: its pop culture presence and in-your-face ads) is also the thing that makes it look so bad when fakes get through. And it appears that A LOT of fakes make it through (Luber mentioned 1% of fakes pass through a day).
@GOAT on the other hand - keeps a very low profile. They don’t make huge publicized promises and aren’t all that loud about it. So when a fake gets through on GOAT, you rarely, if ever, hear about it. I know it happens - take a look at the pic above that I came across earlier for some size 10 Yeezy Solars - 5 pairs pictured, 3 pairs are OBVIOUS fakes. One pair is legit. And the last pair doesn’t have the pics I need to determine. They denied a pair I sent in...they didn’t tell me why, but I was able to get it verified with 6 out of 7 shops in the Bay Area, one who purchased it from me outright.
IMO - @stockx is good for hype , @GOAT is good for collectors. What do you consider yourself? I’m not a guy who buys anything hyped, so I mostly stay away from @stockX because they really don’t carry the obscure stuff I’m looking for. I’ve been happy, thus far, with my experience on @GOAT. I know people who swear by both. What do YOU think?
