Had a brief discussion with a dude I highly respect the other day shortly after he listened to that episode of @sneakerhistory with @nickengvall and @russbengtson and he picked up on an interesting point that was being made that largely went over my head. Once he put words to it, though, it was hard for me to shake.
At what point did it become more exciting to get the SNKRS confirmation than it did to actually make the memories in the shoes?
Like...if I think of the shoes I had as a kid and made some of those transformative memories in, that’s really what’s important, right?
This might be one of those ‘old guy’ things...but...if you’re young, think about it. As a teacher, I had several students stay after class to tell me they ‘hit’ on the Travis Scott 1’s that dropped on the app...I had several students tell me they liked my vintage shoes...I had several students ask me where I bought my shoes...but I really didn’t have anyone tell me *why* they liked the shoes that they were going after.
I’m totally guilty of it. I’ve told countless stories of how I copped and really have more memories of discovering shoes than I do actually doing anything of consequence IN them. I remember where I bought my first pair of Penny II’s (Folsom outlets) and I remember playing probably 1,000 basketball games in them...I remember wearing them to my high school graduation...I wore them as water shoes running through the rivers in Tahoe and Yosemite several summers...and I eventually gave them away when they no longer served a purpose for me. And the funny part...I don’t even really need to own another pair again. I’m not making new memories in Penny II’s.
Maybe I’m just overlooking it. Maybe we’re so excited to ‘hit’ on SNKRS because we PLAN on making super dope memories in the shoes. And that is ALWAYS the hope.
I don’t know...I guess what I’m trying to say...if you’re young...try to focus less on the act of giving some massive multinational company your money and try to focus more on what kinds of dope memories you’re going to make in the shoes that you’re buying...As my dudes at @solesupremacy like to say: Life > Shoes
