I bring this up every once in a while because I think it’s poignant - but IMO - the reason dunks are always such a hit is because they do a masterful job of merging as many ‘street’ cultures as possible. Depending on where you’re from, ‘street’ culture can represent basketball or skateboarding or hip hop or punk or...any number of things. After all - it is a basketball shoe retrofitted with skateboarding features. And they slap pop-culture references on top of it to make it...quite possibly...the furthest reaching silhouette imaginable.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again - the first time I ever saw this mix of cultures was through the ‘So Wha’cha Want’ video by the Beastie Boys. Everything just kinda clicked for me Hip hop...Skateboarding...and basketball (through a Knicks T-shirt). Obviously SLAM took that to new heights.

I’ve been into shoes for as long as I can remember. But they became a lot of fun for me and I started looking at them in a different way around the time the first Dunk Craze was poppin off...2003ish. The first pair I ever bought was a pair of the stuffed tongue B’s at an Urban Outfitters in San Francisco in 2002 and once I moved to New York it was ALL about the dunks for a good 3 years.

A few months ago - I saw the tweet above and...yup. Obviously @russbengtson was referring to the latest Kyrie’s, but when the Lucky/Unlucky Dunk SBs were set to come out - I remember there was a rumor floating around that every pair was in a sealed foil bag. Unlucky’s were supposedly in the vast majority of the bags and Lucky’s were to be randomly inserted here and there. I remember thinking - ‘goddam, what a cool idea. This is just like baseball cards’: whenever you step into a store or purchase a ‘pack’ - you never know what you’re gonna find. This is not how they actually released, but I remember making the connection a LONG time ago thinking of what could transpire.

So here we are. Dunks as baseball cards. And...yes...that’s where I took it. Y’all been asking for my next card set and it’s currently on the slow boat from overseas. It’s almost here. And it’s based on the FIRST Dunk craze… #dunkydunks
