Wanted to post about this immediately after watching ‘Night Stalker’, but didn’t want to put any spoilers out there into the world...I figure the statute of limitations is probably up, though, so let’s talk about this ‘Night Stalker’ thing…spoilers possibly to follow...
If you haven’t watched it...I’d recommend it. I wouldn’t make any claims on it’s validity or anything other than its entertainment value...I’m not big into making documentary recommendations - I’ve recommended far too many that turned out to be bullshit sensationalism - but this one was gripping. I had never heard of the Night Stalker and I was transfixed by this mini-series. Truth be told, it scared the shit out of me. A 40 year old man. I doubled and triple checked every window lock in my house for a straight week after binge-watching the series over a couple of days.
So. Sneakers.
First - I’m shocked I’ve seen NO ONE post about this yet.
If you haven’t watched it...the primary evidence they find at crime scene after crime scene is a shoeprint. A shoeprint that gains clarity after each homicide and is built into a shoe print that me - a self-proclaimed ‘sneaker savant’ - couldn’t pinpoint in a million years. Turns out...it’s an Avia shoe. And they dedicate a large portion of one of the episodes into tracing the shoes origins. I’ve heard the term ‘trace evidence’ before, but never quite understood what it meant - in this case, a police officer in charge of trace evidence took images and measurements of the shoe prints and went to shoe stores after shoe store trying to find what kind of shoe it was. When he found out what kind of shoe it was, he then took a trip to they U.S. headquarters of Avia and met with the product manager to talk about the shoes and to trace the various orders that were placed across the U.S. that matched this shoe. Once he met the manager, they zeroed in on which actual store sold the ONLY pair of black Avia’s in the Los Angeles area that the Night Stalker wore when he was out terrorizing the L.A. area. I dunno...it’s kinda hard for me to explain, but I was geekin out the whole time I was watching it...I LOVE sneaker mysteries and this was one riveting.
