In 2006 - I was deep in Wall Street life. I really thought that working at a brokerage house was my destiny. Nevermind that I didn’t really care about it - I sure enjoyed the perks. One such perk - I happened to be good friends with the lady who was in charge of disbursing tickets to games. If no one at the company ‘bought’ a ticket, they’d just go to waste. And the thing was, this was 2003-2010 in NY, so no one really gave a shit about going to Knicks or Nets games, so I got free tickets to a NUMBER of games. I’m talking like 15-20 games over the course of each year. And I got to see *almost* all the greats during those years. Kobe being the most memorable.
Anyway, one of the first games I was ever given tickets to...I had 2nd row seats. It was the Knicks vs. the Bobcats and the matchup was trash, but I couldn’t imagine passing up 2nd row seats. I called my girl and a couple of friends of ours and we all met up at MSG. The atmosphere was actually kind of electric when we got in...I don’t know why but people were hyped. Before the game started, there was this huge commotion right next to us and...it took us a second to realize, but it was the GOAT Michael Jordan walking over to his seat, which happened to be 3 seats from mine. Knowing MJ was in the building set the energy level over the edge.
I don’t remember much of the game itself, but I remember it was a close matchup the whole time - everyone was tryna show out for MJ.
Anyway, the game is tied with 0.02 seconds left in DOUBLE overtime. Everyone is on their feet. The place is going batshit crazy. Someone tosses the ball in from out of bounds, NYK David Lee extends above the rim, taps that shit and it somehow, miraculously goes in. The crowd explodes. Swipe to see it.
Would I buy a digital memory of that tip in? Absolutely. But that’s because that moment means something to me. Would I buy a random #nbatopshot of a Ja Morant dunk? Prolly not. Unless I was there for it. Or I knew I could flip it heavy. But that’s the thing about collectibles - everyone collects for their OWN reasons.
