The Sneaker Savant

I’ve been tryna get y’all up to speed on this digital/crypto/NFT world and then this happened. TODAY.

Short version: an EXTREMELY popular digital collectibles artist collaborated with a sneaker artist and dropped PRE-ORDERS for sneakers + NFTs and sold out in less than 5 hours. $3M just like that.

Who bought these sneakers? Well, most likely it wasn’t sneakerheads (who’d rather scrap over a few bucks on the same tired releases over and over again on StockX). The purchasers were probably a few different types of people:

1. Supporters of either @fewocious (the artist) or @rtfkt (virtual sneaker creator) and just want to see them win. Fewocious is an 18 year old digital artist who has been KILLING the crypto space - she has a TON of fans who just want to see her succeed.

2. Flippers in the digital collectibles space - tokens to secure each physical pair started at $3k up to $10k...and most of these flippers know that there is a lot of time before the April 10th physical sneaker release, at which time they can probably flip these tokens for 10-100x the cost they purchased them for.

3. Investors in the digital collectibles space - people who know that these tokens/shoes are bound to be worth something serious in the coming months or years.

4. Collectors of digital art - people who collect art. Lest we forget the dude who paid $120k for a banana taped to a wall at Art Basel?

5. Crypto kings and queens - people who got into the crypto space early and are just putting their excess capital into all kinds of cool projects.

I know it’s new and it’s crazy and it probably looks hella confusing, but this stuff is real and it is fascinating and my mind has been spinning for the past few weeks that I’ve been researching it.
