That ‘fakes’ post from the other day (yeah, I know, yet another about fake shoes) made me think about the notion of a ‘grail’.
Back in the day...maybe 2003, I had a list of 4 shoes on my grail list:
1. Jordan XII OG Playoffs
2. Penny II Black/Atlantic
3. Jordan VI Infrared
4. Black/White AF1 Mid ‘NYC’
And that was it. Those four pairs. I told myself time and time again that once I got my hands on those 4 pairs, I was done with the sneaker game forever. The problem was, you couldn’t just ‘buy’ them. They weren’t available. Sure, you could find crumbling pairs of Penny II’s and Jordan VI’s on ebay, and the Black/White AF1 was just something that never really actually released in any kind of attainable way. The XII’s, I bought when I got my first corporate job in NY (along with a Movado Esperanza), but I never really wore them because they were not a good shoe to go walking around in.
Releases came and went...and...honestly...I kind of willfully put them on the backburner - knowing that once I secured the 4 I would have no more excuses. So I let all 4 pass me by at one time or another. One thing I didn’t realize - the longer I took, the more shit I wanted to add to my ‘grail’ list. And suddenly my grail list was 40-50 pairs deep...and...at a certain point...I just realized...I’m so deep in this shit, I no longer have grails. They’re all stuff I want and ain’t gonna lose sleep over any of them because there are so many of them.
Grails are like...I feel like grails are for rookies. I’ve copped enough of my personal grails to know that any one of them could easily be replaced by another and with the scores of releases from every brand coming damn near every day, why would I ever get caught up on one pair? Are you caught up on any ONE pair?
