When I was a kid, there was news of this baseball card ‘error’ that had everyone double-checking their commons and throw-away boxes. The 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken card. The story goes, when Billy Ripken was headed up for his headshot, he scribbled the words ‘F*ck Face’ on the knob of the bat as a practical joke. At the time, through the levels and levels and levels of review, no one noticed. But then someone did.
In a scramble to fix this potential PR nightmare, Fleer ended up ‘fixing’ this card by releasing several different versions in order to cover up the ‘F*ck Face’ on the knob - a white box version, a black box version, a ‘white scribble’ version, a ‘black scribble’ version, a ‘sawed off’ version and blah blah blah.
No matter what happened…we were all looking for that ‘F*ck Face’ card.
I always think of that card whenever I come across those Photo Blue Jordan 9’s…according to the internet: “When the ‘Photo Blue’ Air Jordan Retro 9 first went into production, the factory churned out a massive amount of pairs with an incorrect outsole.” And instead of ‘fixing’ them, they decided to release them with that cool little story…
Not as awesome as a ‘F*ck Face’ card, I still think this is kind of cool.
