A few thoughts on the Footlocker EU x Panini cards y'all tagged me on...
1. I’m not exactly sure what ‘licensed’ means in this particular case. I can’t imagine any of these brands licensed their shoes to exist in packs with other brands and I'm not seeing any 'licensing' on the back of the cards other than 'Panini' and 'Footlocker'. So…I dunno...is that what licensed means? I'd rather have the sneaker brand licenses than card brand licenses.
2. I'm definitely not the first to put sneakers on cards, but I would say I'm the first to do it as more than a marketing ploy. Unfortunately, throughout the comments of the original post I kept seeing the term ‘fan art’ and ‘bootleg’ regarding the cards I released. I don't know if those are the correct terms or if it's just really dismissive. It feels like the latter. We’ve documented close to 1,000 different pairs of shoes at this point and we haven't even really started. We are documenting sneaker history in a unique way - our ‘art’ is the story and we are doing it because it is being lost (to time). I could write a book but I don't think it's nearly as interesting as cards. So if that’s something to be dismissed because of ‘licensing’, should we also say that Dapper Dan, or @freehandprofit or @theshoesurgeon merely create 'fan art' too?
3. Massive chains like Footlocker are great for the introduction of conceptual ideas, just like fast food is. But neither really interests me. Out of all the sneaker stores in the world, chain stores are pretty much the last places I care to step into. I like going into thrift shops and small businesses because these are the places I tend to discover crazy (or forgotten) shoes. I like the stuff I've gotta dig deep for. It's a big market - I think that FL releasing a set of cards with some of the most hyped shoes is not a bad thing, but it’s not for me.
Anyway, congrats on the release @kishkash1 & @createdby.cait and thanks to all who tagged me in the original post...Be on the lookout for our next set of (relatively) obscure 90’s basketball shoes coming soon. Follow @1tostock for updates!
