PONY (2/2)
There’s a period of my life in which I can attribute the completion of all sorts of ‘full circle’ moments…when I moved to Brooklyn in 2003, after graduating from college in California, a whole new section of my brain was activated. A whole bunch of questions were answered. A whole lot passing thoughts became fully formed. A whole lot of references (that I didn’t even know were references) finally made sense to me. My world opened up.
Like many of you out there, the section(s) of pop culture I chose to focus on while growing up were mainly rap music, basketball, and sneakers…my favorite magazines at the time being The Source, SLAM, and SLAM KICKS. Nothing else could really hold my interest. And I unwittingly went pretty deep on those topics, despite the fact that they ALL had a heavy East Coast bias.
That being said, I bought into *all things New York* because my parents were from New York…and…the magazines told me I should buy into New York. At the time, virtually *none* of this *New York stuff* really made much sense to me…from my parents love of the Yankees and Egg Creams to Wu & Mobb Deep to Foams and Timb’s…growing up in the mountains of California, I just wasn’t set up to understand it. But all that changed when I moved there. When everything started to make sense. When everything came full circle.
And so it was with PONY sneakers. I had heard of PONY sneakers from my mom and dad, and when I was 5 or 6 years old, I showed them the shoes I wanted - Vans. They bought me PONY’s instead. Which, as a 6 year old, was fine. I didn't really understand it UNTIL I understood what life was like in New York, though. And I remember it actually clicking for me in one of those New York shops in Sunset Park when I saw an actual pair of PONY’s…’oh, so that’s why they bought me those.’ Away from the big box corporatization of Sneakers in NY, PONY is pure New York.

Yes, this is a sponsored post…swipe for pics of the pair I received. My favorite part of these M100’s is easily the toe box…adding that little thread pattern definitely sets these apart for me. #pony50thanniversary #osdlive #ponym100
